Post Modern: World Overview
General Information
The year is 2213. The world is largely in a state of uneasy peace; global warfare is rare, outside of a few specific ongoing conflicts in the heart of Africa. However, a new kind of warfare has arisen, one between the people of the world, the governments of nations, and corporations.
North America
The geopolitical boundaries of North America have not been entirely static in recent history. There have been two major upheavals, along with a few minor changes to the political landscape that are worth noting.
The United States of America
The United States of America continues to be a bastion of freedom and opportunity -- or at the very least, that's what the official story is. The reality of the situation is, The U.S. has become more and more stratified by class as time has gone on. The middle class is almost nonexistent, and class strife is found in most major urban centers.
Most importantly, though, the U.S. is no longer 50 states strong. In the middle of the 22nd century, the fight for both state's rights and personal freedom led the former states of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine to band together with the former Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island to form the North American Free States.
Additionally, In 2129, Puerto Rico officially became the then 51st State -- it is now the 48th, after the loss of the northeastern states that seceded.
The North American Free States
In the late 22nd century, the battle between the state government of New Hampshire and the United States Federal Government came to a head. In a move that shocked the nation, then Governor of New Hampshire, James Whitefield, rallied together not only his own state, but also the states of Vermont and Maine, and the then-Canadian provinces of New Brunswick Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island to form the North American Free States. The formation of this new country was based on individual liberties and a distaste for centralized government control.
The NAFS has since become a recognized country, despite protestations from both Canada and the United States. It is a loosely organized collection of the 6 member states, each of which largely governs itself, and works together in matters that pertain to all of the states.
